SAUER compressors onboard Australia’s new Antarctic icebreaker

Feb 1, 2022

Australia’s new Antarctic icebreaker, RSV Nuyina, will be the main lifeline to Australia’s Antarctic and sub-Antarctic research stations and the central platform of their Antarctic and Southern Ocean scientific research.

The RSV Nuyina is equipped with no less than seven SAUER compressors:

1x SAUER Passat WP271L Marine
2x SAUER Passat WP81L Marine
2x SAUER SC76 Marine
2x SAUER Harmattan WP101LON Basic

Construction of the ship at Damen Shipyards in Romania commenced in May 2017, with a steel cutting ceremony, while a keel laying ceremony in August saw the first building-block of the ship consolidated in the drydock.

In September 2018 the vessel was floated from the dry dock to the wet dock for the next phase of construction. In July 2020 the ship was 98% complete, but final harbour testing as well as sea and ice trials were delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

But on October 16th 2021 the Australian people could finally celebrate the arrival in Hobart, from where the RSV Nuyina set off on its first Antarctic voyage as early as the end of December 2021.
